However, identity formation is problematic within the minority group model because its focus is typically on a single issue, for example, race or gender or sexual orientation. According to the authors, this single issue strategy excludes those facing multiple concerns or "triple jeopardy." The authors advocate for the use of an empowerment framework so that "individuals from marginalized groups with multiple stigmas may gain the social, political, and economic support needed to overcome barriers to their full participation in society."
